Spyware software can infect your PC when you download free software, so one effective way to avoid
spyware is by keeping your system clear of excess programs that you don't need. If you really do not need that free screensaver, then restrain yourself and stick with the ones you already have loaded up. Or better yet, opt for a high-quality screensaver that costs a little money but will save you a whole lot of headaches. In addition, staying away from freeware software sites altogether is recommended because even if you don't download anything, many sites will attach a cookie to your browser after you visit the site which will be used to track your movements as you surf online. Avoid questionable sites and you'll have no problem avoiding this type of spyware.
Avoid downloading files from other unknown sources as well. For example, a spyware software program can be downloaded through an e-greeting, email, by clicking a pop-up, or through other seemingly innocent sources. To avoid getting infected through a pop-up advertisement, don't click anywhere in the pop-up window. Instead, click the "X" located at the top right-hand corner of the window to close the pop-up completely. If there's no way to close the window, disconnect from the Internet and close your browser just to be safe. This may seem extreme, but it's much better than getting infected.
Another possible source of spyware infection comes in the form of a browser toolbar. Many malicious toolbars are set up to track your Internet surfing habits and search queries in order to create advertising targeted at you. Toolbars can generate pop-ups and even display dynamic ad content within the toolbar itself which are based on your interests, as suggested by your online browsing activity. In fact, it may appear as if the sites you visit generate the pop-ups you see, but often these advertisements are actually generated by the hidden spyware and/or adware already infecting your computer.
